Deb O’Connell, from Vancouver, British Columbia, was diagnosed in 1996 with a rare progressive neuromuscular disorder that caused severe motor and autonomic dysfunction. She exhibited symptoms typical of multiple sclerosis, bulbar symptoms consistent with ALS, and parkinsoniandeficits such as slow movement (bradykinesia), rigidity, tremor, postural instability, and extreme difficulties with gait and balance. By the advanced stage of EDSS 9.5, Deb was non-ambulatory and experienced rapid muscle degeneration due to bilateral muscular atrophy, leading to excessive weight loss. By 2012, at the time of her inclusion in Somata Genesis’s case study in India, she weighed just 40 pounds.
Somata Genesis collaborated with Canadian doctors on several individual case studies to evaluate the safety and efficacy of regenerative treatments for advanced motoneuron disorders with cerebrovascular characteristics. This case study marked the first historical record of a subject at end-stage EDSS 9.5 receiving treatment specifically designed to halt further progression, with the primary goal of saving her life. Deb faced life-threatening bulbar symptoms, which included difficulties with swallowing, breathing, and speaking. She relied on a BiPAP machine due to breathing challenges. She had to start using a feeding tube by 2002. Her difficulties in swallowing food contributed to inadequate nutrition, and her ability to communicate was limited to soft hums and calls for help. According to her medical history, she had been completely wheelchair-bound for 13 years.
A custom treatment protocol was developed for Deb, which involved several supratentorial, intrathecal, intraarticular, and intramuscular administrations of specific multipotent cell lines and growth factors. These were cultured and glycoprotein-characterized to address the neuroinflammatory dynamics of her disorder and induce neuroplasticity, cerebral angiogenesis, and neurogenesis to combat cerebral atrophy where possible. This protocol began a series of regenerative treatments she was required to undergo over the next five years for long-term outcomes. The study was jointly funded by Canadian specialists and Somata Genesis and was conducted under institutional oversight in India.
Deb underwent 25 days of therapy, which included various selective administrations of cellular biologics and growth factors specifically designed to help her brain overcome chronic neurological challenges. Within days of starting the brain preconditioning protocol, Deb showed improvementin her ability to swallow, marking one of her first signs of recovery. She also regained strength in her lower extremities and was able to take her first steps in over a decade, as demonstrated during her physiotherapy sessions both in India and back home. Over the following two years, Deb continued to show improvements in her mobility, speech, swallowing, and emotional well-being. She regained muscle mass that she had lost over the years, indicating advancements in her cerebellar health. With a renewed quality of life, Deb prepared for her next cellular transplant, which was planned to take place in Canada.
However, a lack of research funding and the absence of regulatory support created new challenges. This not only delayed her therapy in Canada but also prevented her from receiving it in India.
Tragically, Deb passed away from pneumonia in 2016. The persistence of her bulbar symptoms may have contributed to her decline, although it is uncertain due to our follow-up program in Canada being significantly hindered. Had she received her follow-up infusions in a timely manner, it is possible that Deb’s quality of life could have improved further. This case highlights the serious shortcomings of our conventional health systems in recognizing and addressing priorities. There is an urgent need for thorough research and constructive recognition to save lives. Hopefully, in the future, patients like Deb will have a better chance of survival when appropriate treatments become available through a reliable healthcare network. With each case, we move one step closer to achieving this goal.
