The Dangers of Products Marketed as MSC

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are not a miracle cure for every medical condition. These cells form connective tissue and are found abundantly in most multicellular organisms, including humans.

MSCs are less immunogenic, making them an appealing option for allogeneic cellular transplant experiments, not because they always work; rather, it is because they are less likely to elicit an immune response. In recent years, MSC therapies have gained popularity in spa clinics due to excessive social media marketing. What originally started as rejuvenation therapies is now being promoted for almost any medical condition. Some incompetent facilities are attempting to offer unsafe procedures, such as intrathecal MSC administrations, in unregulated environments.

The effectiveness of a treatment relies on product applicability, the mechanism of action, and efficient delivery methods. Although MSC administrations have shown promise in controlling immune responses for specific conditions, many irrelevant applications yield no viable results due to a lack of clinical rationale.

The issues begin with product identification and extend through clinical implementation. Many entities harvest cellular material from connective tissue, assuming it contains high concentrations of mesenchymal cells. Sources such as adipocytes, Wharton’s jelly, or human fat are often marketed as mesenchymal cells. Providers typically sell them in vials or inject them directly, often using more invasive methods than simple intravenous drips. Without a proper mechanism to ensure the safety of the source or the final product, the lack of scientific validation poses a significant risk of contamination, inherited mutations, and immune triggers.

The situation becomes even more concerning when unregulated facilities attempt invasive clinical procedures, such as intrathecal, inter-articular, intra-nasal, or intra-discal administrations, in unsuitable environments. Due to the absence of regulatory oversight, licensing, or medicolegal liability, these operations rely solely on the patient’s trust in the provider, who often ignores the clinical disorder needing treatment. This trust is established quickly based on the customer’s misconception that MSCs are the stem cell gold standard and that stem cells can heal everything.

A quickly perishable product derived from another human being can be dangerous if not applied correctly. Risks, including donor blood contamination, uncharacterized harvesting, infections, dead cell debris, and poor administration practices, can result in patients worsening their conditions when seeking the cheapest or most accessible stem cell options.

It is crucial to educate yourself not only about the product being offered but also about your specific clinical condition to determine what is appropriate. The human body is in a constant state of evolution, and abruptly transplanting cells without a clinical rationale is not a viable shortcut for resolving serious medical issues. If this were the case, major pharmaceutical companies would have been the first to adopt such shortcuts. Be vigilant and choose what is safe and sound for your medical condition.
